Waterfalls of North Island (Central Plateau/Taranaki/Waikato)

The Emerald Lakes in the Tongariro Crossing

The Western and Central North Island regions has some of the island's tallest waterfalls mixed with a blend of glow worm caves, volcanic moonscapes, and remote farmlands.

For the purposes of this website, this section covers the Central Plateau, the Taranaki District, and the Waikato District.

The Central Plateau contains some of the country's most dramatic volcanic moonscapes. It regularly passed as the forbidding land of Mordor during the Lord of the Rings movies. However, trampers willing to participate in some excusions away from their cars will be rewarded with a smorgasbord of colors watched over by scenic conical peaks. The Tongariro Crossing is the country's most famous day hike and goes right through the heart of this area. Strangely paradoxical is the fact that several waterfalls are present in this terrain (such as Waitonga Falls and Taranaki Falls), which really make it a must for the nature lover (let alone the waterfall lover).

The Taranaki District contains some of the more remote tracts of forest and farm lands in the country. Anchored in the far west by the perfectly conical Mt Taranaki, you can find waterfalls that range from the tall and slender to the short and wide. Such falls include Mt Damper Falls and Raukawa Falls.

The Waikato District contains the North Island's most spectacular waterfalls. In addition to glow worm caves and natural bridges, you can also find waterfalls like the towering Wairere Falls and the symmetric Marokopa Falls.
