The South Island's southernmost regions are home to the most scenic, untouched, and wettest parts of New Zealand.
Included here in the Fiordland region are the mythical Milford Sound and remote Doubtful Sound, each with their incredibly beautiful fiords that have made them must-see tourist attractions. With their steep-walled valleys and abundant rainfall, you can find the country's tallest and most spectacular waterfalls. One of the finest walks in the world - the Milford Track - terminates at the Milford Sound, but not before rewarding trampers with a chance to see Sutherland Falls - New Zealand's mightiest waterfall.
The Southland region features the Catlins Forest Park along the southernmost shores of the South Island. Here you can find a collection of beautiful waterfalls as well. While lacking in the sheer magnitude and height of their wild neighbors to the northwest, these falls have their own character and personality. Among them are the attractive McLean Falls and the alluring Purakaunui Falls.
