Following the Merced River, the Merced Canyon is the corridor from the town of El Portal ("Hell Portal" according to residents due to its hot summers) through the Arch Rock Entrance to the foot of Yosemite Valley. While many of the waterfalls here would be revered outside Yosemite, they are merely the appetizers to the main courses lying just to the east. Nonetheless, the waterfalls found here are excellent in their own right and they certainly provide a little more peace and quiet than their louder neighbors to the east.
While the waterfalls featured here are of the overlooked and lesser known variety (such as Wildcat Falls and Silver Strand Falls), the main attraction is Cascade Falls.
