South Yosemite is often passed through and overlooked by visitors hastily making their way to Yosemite Valley. Thus, this region tends to be quieter and less crowded than its famous neighbors to the north.
Even though people spend less time here in the park, it does feature giant sequoia trees in the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees, the historical township of Wawona, and some subtler features and formations such as the Wawona Dome and the South Fork of the Merced River.
Further north, you can also access Glacier Point Road, which passes by Badger Pass (possibly the oldest groomed skiing area in California) and ends at the dramatic Glacier Point. Hardier visitors can also backpack deep into the Southern Yosemite backcountry to such destinations as Chilnualna Lakes, Deer Camp, and even the intriguing Mt Starr King.
There are also a few waterfalls in this region - namely Chilnualna Falls and Alder Creek Falls. Although I'm sure there are other waterfalls and cascades along some of the creeks you're bound to see as you drive along Hwy 41 (e.g. Rail Creek, Strawberry Creek, Grouse Creek, etc.), there are no formal trails allowing safe exploration for such cascades and waterfalls. Thus, Chilnualna and Alder Creek Falls are the only ones I've been to, and they'll be the only falls described in this section of this website.
